Vodo di Cadore
 | | Italian |
Vodo di Cadore is a small town located quite in the middle of River Boite valley. The impressive peaks of mount Antelao, along with thick forests and small winding roads and, on the other side, mount Pelmo, watch over the town and its people. The site where the town is positioned is quite strait and over the main road, which lead to Cortina d’Ampezzo, run the cycle lane “Lunga Via delle Dolomiti” (Dolomites Cycle Lane) as well. The town is surrounded by meadows and woods where lots of haylofts rise, testify old local traditions. Its centre is located away from the main road traffic and the neat urban space gives visitors a sense of tranquility and a placid feeling. Once upon a time, from Vodo used to be a small road, today just a path, which leaded to Zoppè di Cadore; now reachable only through a twisting road located on the side of Val di Zoldo (Zoldo Valley). On both sides of the valley there are lots of paths which lead tourists to striking and panoramic places. During the époque of the Risorgimento, not far away from Vodo, close to the Venas “Chiusa” (sluice gate), a famous battle took place and today a gravestone remembers that historic event. In the past, numbers of its citizens left the town looking for a better life abroad, principally in North Europe. Lots of them became craftsmen, like carpenters and blacksmiths. Few of them rather specialize in the hand-made ice cream production, reaching quite a success not just between gourmets, and this has been a great source of income for many families. The town of Vodo, geographically comprises two small hamlets: Peaio and Vinigo. Right before reaching the town, driving towards Cortina d’Ampezzo, the road cross Peaio and, on the right, is located a small junction to Vinigo. This hamlet, even so small, worth surely a visit. It’s a very striking place. It is located at the top of a little upland, on the most panoramic and breathtaking spot where a wonderful medieval Church arises. Vinigo has very old origins. It’s spread in a kind of circle around fields. In the past, agriculture and wood were the only source of maintenance of the town. Today the main prerogative is the tranquility of the place and the natural beauties which surround it. In Cadore Valley, Vinigo is well known for a special thing: the cabbage. Its quality is exceptional! Only here it keeps its taste and uniqueness.
